Study Skills Course Outline

As you review the outline, you probably recognize that most of this material has never been taught to your child in a formal way. Think: it's easier to become an outstanding student once someone has showed you the way.

  1. Reading for Results
    Students will learn how to:
    • Overcome the most common habits that cause slow reading
    • Use strategies that dramatically improve comprehension
    • Make the most of new skills with coaching sessions
    • Measure progress along the way
  2. Learning Style Measures
    High Schoolers will learn to:
    • Discover their own styles of thinking
    • Compare their own to their school's preferred style
    • Determine teacher styles to better prepare for exams
  3. Meaningful Note Taking
    Teens will discover how to:
    • Use the MEMORY MINDERS system of taking notes that "do the job"
    • Apply new skills to reading and lecture situations
    • Incorporate our 15-second review on a regular basis
    • Use notes to prepare for tests
  4. Study Management
    Students will find out how to:
    • Make study time more effective
    • Minimize distractions and interruptions
    • Make the most of their personal thinking styles

    • Identify special tools that will enable them to listen better in class
    • Take organized notes, even in a disorganized class
    • Overcome "Listener's Block"
    • Learn ways to improve their memory

    Students will learn:
    • Tips on acing short-answer tests
    • How to use the test itself to find out the answers
    • The "How-to's" of writing better exam essays
  7. Taking Control
    This portion of the seminar will show your teenager:
    • How to become a self-coach
    • How to keep growing: tools for ongoing improvements
