The Learner's EdgeSM Advanced Reading ManagementA course designed to sharpen student skills in reading, thinking, and learning.
Many students approach school somewhat passively. They lack strategies for reading, writing, listening and note taking, all skills crucial for academic success. The main focus of this course is to increase reading speed and comprehension for average and above average students. It does not meet the needs of a remedial reading program.
TWO-DAY COURSE CONTENT
Initial Assessment - Measure overall speed and comprehension rates in fiction and non-fiction passages
- Set individual student goals for the program
Reading - Review four common bad reading habits that result in slow reading, and ways to overcome each
- Explore five distinct reading speeds and when to use them
- Teach and coach skills that give appropriate comprehension at each of the five reading speeds
- Practice each new skill, measure and record improvements in speed and comprehension
- Detail a powerful 10-minutes-a-week plan to maintain and grow gains made during the class
Learning Style - Identify a personal learning style
- Develop strategies to apply learning style awareness in the classroom and during study time
- Learn keys to concentration and effective listening
Note Taking - Introduce MEMORY MINDERS as a note taking strategy
- Discuss the Cornell Method of note taking
- Practice taking lecture notes using systems that match personal learning styles
- Create notes that aid in recall and test preparation
Test Taking - Explore productive ways to study for teacher-made exams
- Review successful strategies for taking short answer and essay tests
- Practice the three-step approach to writing test essays
Study Management - Overcome procrastination
- Gain control of study time
Final Assessment - Measure reading speed and comprehension rates in fiction and non-fiction passages
- Confer with students on individual progress toward goals
- Mail progress report to parents
